Blue Highway LLC (View Articles)
Blue Highway is a wholly owned subsidiary of Welch Allyn, a privately held leader in front-line diagnostic healthcare. Officially, BLUE HIGHWAY was formed to "create economic value through new customer insight, products or services, policy and regulatory insight, or business models". In plain language, BLUE HIGHWAY exists to innovate. And innovation is really about capitalizing on invention. The way we see it, there are three kinds of innovation: Incremental innovation – The evolutionary improvement of the technology for an existing practice (e.g., a device to measure blood pressure on the “inflate” instead of the “deflate”). It is based on known needs of customers and sustains or increases market share. Radical innovation – Developing completely new technology for an existing practice (e.g., a device to measure blood pressure without a cuff). It is based on predicted needs of customers and explodes a market. Breakthrough innovation – Inventing revolutionary new technology for new clinical practice (e.g., a device to measure a new vital sign that will replace/displace blood pressure measuring completely) that has the potential to spawn entirely new markets. At BLUE HIGHWAY, our primary focus is on disruptive and breakthrough innovations in our core technical areas.

Glannaventa Inc. (View Articles)
Glannaventa, Inc. is a Puget Sound-based company developing an out-patient based endoscopic screening technique for early-stage fallopian-tube-origin epithelial ovarian cancer. The majority of high-grade serous ovarian cancer is believed to originate not on the ovary itself, but rather in the distal fallopian tube and fimbriae, with subsequent migration to the ovary and peritoneum. Beyond this point the disease is aggressive and metastatic but largely asymptomatic, and is typically only diagnosed at Stages 3/4 where the 5-year survival rate is around 25%. If the disease could be detected earlier, survival rates could be improved to over 90%. We are developing the GEODE(tm) micro-endoscope to image the carcinogenesis sites in the distal fallopian tube using both structural (OCT) and functional (multi-spectral fluorescence) imaging techniques. The falloposcope is capable of detecting early-stage lesions at a volume size 10 - 50 times smaller than the threshold for detecting a secreted biomarker or the reliable detection limits for TVUS, and should have a profound effect on our ability to detect this "silent killer".

Scinvivo (View Articles)
Scinvivo is a Dutch heatlh-tech start-up and we are developing an OCT imaging catheter for bladder cancer diagnostics. Current imaging techniques for bladder cancer have their limitations, as they only enable the urologist to visualise the bladder wall surface. In 30% of the cases, healthy tissue is incorrectly classified as cancerous. Another limitation is that it is difficult to fully remove a tumor during a surgical procedure, as the borders of the tumor are difficult to visualize. The last limitation is that it is impossible to determine the invasion depth of the tumor with current imaging technologies, while the invasion depth has major impact on the proposed treatment. All these limitation lead to unnecessary, invasive, and costly interventions. Scinvivos technology enables the urologist to improve diagnosis, and thus decreasing the amount of interventions, patient burden, and costs

Tomophase Corporation (View Articles)
Tomophase Corporation. In April 2014, Tomophase Corp. was acquired by a Chinese company called Winstar, and is now named Tomophase Inc. Pulmonary Systems. Tomophase Corporation was founded in 2003 with a goal of providing innovative solutions for unmet medical needs through the use of light-based imaging and therapy. Many major advances in medicine have been marked by the introduction of new medical imaging tools, such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography. We believe that a new breakthrough, one of similar magnitude, is now within our reach — the use of light in guiding us to new ways of diagnosing diseases and improving our lives. Tomophase has developed and patented technology in the field of optical coherence tomography (OCT) which is capable of delivering high quality, high resolution cross-sectional tissue images in real-time. With the Tomophase technology, tissue structure can be observed up to 2-3 mm below the surface with remarkable clarity and without biopsy or the use of radiation, UV light or image contrast agents. Our first proposed application of this innovative technology is in pulmonary medicine for the tomographic imaging of airways and pulmonary tissue. We believe the Tomophase OCT imaging system will allow clinicians, for the first time, to visualize such microanatomic features as airway epithelia, mucosa, smooth muscle layer both in-vivo and in-situ. This may facilitate or improve many of the interventional procedures and therapeutic approaches in pulmonology. Further development may also lead to tools for improving the management of lung cancer as well as applications in other fields of medicine.
